Q: Sharon, has baking always been a big part of your life, or did you have an ‘a-ha moment’ and fall in love with it?
S: I’ve always liked sweet food, but never knew how to bake until I moved away from home. Then I tried baking for myself and really enjoyed it. But I enjoy the decorating side more, and my first decorating class was my ‘a-ha moment’.
Q: Your book is full of incredible cakes for all ages. We know it’s like picking a favourite child, but do you have a few in there you especially love?
S: The Noah’s Ark. Just because there are so many different animals and I love modelling them.
Q: What would be your hot tips for someone wanting to create a Sharon Wee Creations cake at home for a special birthday?
S: Make sure you invest the time in setting up the cake correctly. Plan ahead so you have everything you need and aren’t stressed out at the last minute. A lot of the decorations (like figurines) can and should be done in advance so they have time to dry. It also makes it less stressful assembling the cake.
Q: What Queen products are in your pantry right now? Do you have a favourite Queen product?
The vanilla bean paste is my favourite, I have a huge bucket. My pantry also has a lot of flavourings and some sprinkles.
Q: Lastly, being at the forefront of the Australian cake decorating scene, we’re sure you can see some big trends coming for 2015-2016. Can you share any predictions with us?
S: I think some people are going back to basics with rustic cakes but also piping, buttercream, etc. A lot of the older styles seem to be coming back in a big way. I’m also seeing some more decadent looking cakes rather than cakes that are simply works of art.
